Dinner at Kerry's

By MysticMeg

(This story carries on where 'The Morning After the Night Before' left off)

The following morning, Kerry woke once more in Kim's room, not to mention Kim's loving arms. She lay there, savouring the moment, basking in her regained peace and security. But in the back of her mind, there remained a niggling doubt - how would her staff react? Would they ever take her seriously again? Then looking over at Kim, she realised that none of this mattered. Whatever happened, she had the one she loved.

Kim began to stir, and greeted Kerry with one of her smiles;

L: "Hey."

W: "Hey."

L: "You been awake long?"

W: "No."

L: "Should've woken me...Now it's time to get up"

W: "You're terrible!"

Kim got up and reached for her robe; Kerry content, as always, to watch her.

L: "What were you thinking about?"

W: "Ah - going in to work this morning."

L: "Don't worry about it, Kerry. I'll be there with you."

W: "You know something - I'm not worried at all."

L: "Well I didn't think you'd be saying that."

Nevertheless, her heart was beating anxiously as they drove up a little later. They walked in the ambulance doors. Clearly people were trying not to stare, but more heads turned as Kim appeared behind Kerry. Kerry had expected at least a blush, but she felt amazingly cool. She walked with Kim to the lifts, and there they parted, this time, much to Dave's disappointment, with a comparatively chaste kiss on the cheek.

That day, everyone studiously avoided bringing up the subject, contenting themselves with curious looks, and the occasional conversation cut short as Kerry passed. The only one brave enough, or tactful enough, to bring it up was Luka;

K: "I guess things worked out for you, Kerry."

W: "Yes they did."

K: "I'm very happy for you."

W: "Thanks, Luka -- for everything."

So the week passed relatively calmly. On Thursday night, Kerry had something to ask Kim;

W: "You working tomorrow night?"

L: "No, you got something planned?" she asked, mischievously.

W: "Well yes. But not what you're thinking about! I'm having some people to dinner, and I'd really like you to be here."

L: "You would?"

W: "What, aren't I allowed to show you off to my friends?"

L: [laughing] "As long as you give mine a second chance - I'll tell them to behave!"

W: "All right, it's a deal."

L: "Why don't I come over in the afternoon, I'll help you cook."

W: "Great."

By seven on Friday evening, everything was ready. Kerry poured them a glass of wine, and they waited for the guests.

L: "Are you sure you're ready?"

W: "Yeah, everything's in the oven."

L: "You know that's not what I meant."

W: "I'm sorry [gulping wine]. I'm as ready as I'll ever be - [doorbell rings] They're here!"

Kerry rushed to the door, and Kim remained in the lounge, listening to the voices outside.

W: "Rachel! Lovely to see you."

Rachel: "You too Kerry. You look great. In fact, you look more than great - are you seeing someone?"

W: [Shyly] "Well actually, I am."

R: "You are! Is he here?"

W: [with a smile] "In the lounge, go on in."

Rachel hurried in, all expectant, to be met with a smiling Kim, coolly sipping her wine. Kerry followed closely behind.

W: "Kim, this is Rachel. Rachel, meet Kim."

L: "Pleased to meet you."

R: [turning to Kerry in astonishment] "What? Are you two..."

W: "Yes, we are."

R: "Christ! You're one dark horse, Kerry. How long have you been keeping this from us?"

W: [looks at Kim] "We've had our ups and downs, but we met about 3 months ago."

R: [recovering slightly, turns to Kim] "I'm sorry, I'm being very rude. It's just a bit of a shock."

L: "Sure, I understand."

R: "So who else are you shocking me with tonight? Elvis, perhaps?"

W: [relieved laugh] "No, just Brian and Carol. And they're picking up Michael on the way - [doorbell rings again]

That'll be them."

[Kerry opens the door, various greetings as they come in.]

Michael: "So it's just the old gang tonight is it?"

W: "Actually, there's someone else I want you to meet."

Carol: "Not another fusty old doctor?"

W: "Not quite, no."

[Kerry shepherds them in]

W: "OK - Kim this is Carol, Brian and Michael. You guys, this is Kim - my girlfriend."

L: "Hi."

[Shocked silence]

Brian: "Did you just say that?"

[another painful silence]

Carol saw the look on Kerry's face, and made an effort. She moved over to Kim, trying to break the ice.

C: "So, how did you two meet?"

L: "I work at County too, I'm a Psychiatrist. I've been assigned to the ER - in fact, Kerry's my boss."

M: "Don't let her work you too hard!"

After such an awkward start, thankfully Kerry's friends were not immune to Kim's charms, and soon everyone warmed to her .

At dinner the wine flowed a little more freely than usual. Kim got Brian started on politics, his pet subject, while the others joined in, or caught up on each other's news. After they'd finished, Rachel got up to help clear. She followed Kerry into the kitchen, slightly unsteady on her feet.

W: "How much wine have you had, Rachel! - you want some coffee?"

R: "Nonsense, I'm not drunk! You know, I really like her."

W: "So do I."

R: "So have you and her...you know."

W: [blushing] "Now I know you're drunk."

R: "You have, haven't you. So come on...you always used to tell me these things."

W: "It's better - better than anyone. Better than I thought possible."[momentarily distracted]

R: "Well I'm glad she makes you happy."

W: "Hm? Oh, thanks, Rach."

Not much later, the party broke up. As she stood with Kim, waving the other's goodbye, Kerry felt for the first time that her house was a home.

W: "That went quite well, I thought."

L: "Yeah, it did. I like your friends."

W: "Even Brian?"

L: "He didn't scare me - for long. I guess I should be going too."

W: "You can't go yet!"

L: "Oh, I'll help you clear up first."

W: [turns to face Kim] "That wasn't what I had in mind."

L: [smiling] "Really, Kerry? And what was on your mind?"

W: "Something more like this..." [draws closer, they kiss]

L: "I suppose I could stay a little while."

In the end, the dishes had to wait 'till morning.
